Week 1A: First Blog Entry

Hello and welcome to my blog for CSIT155 - Social Media for Business for the Spring 2021 semester! My name is Anthony, the reasoning behind choosing the theme that I did is because I am a big sports fan. It doesn't matter the sport, it could be baseball, basketball, football, or even cornhole. Yes, cornhole, the popular tailgating and backyard game, is now a sport. I not only love physically participating in these sports but also love watching them. I prefer watching in person but due to Covid-19 that hasn't been much of an option this past year so the couch was the next best option.

I am from a small town located in Northern California where there wasn't much to do, so growing up sports was something that was instilled into me at a young age. I played three main sports throughout my childhood; football, baseball, and basketball. At first, sports were just a hobby of mine that gave me something to do, but soon sports were much more than just a hobby. They became something that I turned to when I needed to take my mind off things or work off some frustration. Sports helped keep me out of trouble and gave me a purpose in my small town. Without the involvement of sports growing up I don't think that I would be who I am today.

As much of an impact as playing sports made on me, I think that watching them made just as much as an impact. If I wasn't playing a sport then I was watching one. Whether it was on tv with my dad or getting tickets to a game and watching them in person. I can still remember my first professional sporting event that I went to. It was a Golden State Warriors basketball game at Oracle Arena with my dad. I can remember the feeling of walking to our seats and seeing the basketball court for the first time. When I think back to moments like that I can't help but smile.

The social media platforms that I personally use are Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. I use each one for different things in my personal life. For example, Facebook I use mostly to stay in connect with family members and long-distance friends that I made in the Marine Corps. Instagram is primarily used for posting pictures of my food, travel destinations, and my French Bulldogs (Axl and Kash). I use Twitter the least out of the three, but Twitter is good for keeping up with the latest updates in the world. Whether it be the latest sports news or who is going to be the next Bachelor. I can always count on Twitter to have the latest scoop.

When it comes to using social media for business I think that Facebook and Instagram are the most effective. Facebook is one of the largest social media platforms in the world, which makes it a great place to introduce your company to the local market. Instagram is a visual platform to help you form a more personal connection with customers, so when you post pictures and videos of your happy team and customers it helps to engage with the audience.

There are countless options when it comes to social media platforms. Whether you are using it for personal, business, or both it comes down to preference. There are pros and cons to every social media platform you just have to outweigh them and decided which platform is going to benefit you the most. In today's world, social media has a benefit over traditional media because it can get your brand or business in front of people much more quickly and easily. So why not try out as many different platforms as you can? Just don't forget to take a break from social media every now and then so it doesn't start to affect your mental health or well-being.

  1. Hey Anthony, I was also in the Marines. I got out a while ago though in 2010. I also use Facebook to keep up with all my old buddies from Japan and everywhere else. What is your education goal?

I have always enjoyed playing sports but can never get myself to watching anything outside of UFC. I don't like the idea of adopting a team and getting pissed or happy based upon their performance. That's just me though.

I spent the last few years in SE Asia bouncing around as a digital nomad until COVID hit and wrecked that lifestyle. Now I'm back here and going to school, building a YouTube channel, and writing a personal development book.

    Good luck with your semester!

  2. Hi Anthony, I hope we get to see pictures of your dogs in some of the next posts. My son has a friend from middle school who set up an Instagram only posting cute pet pictures that he re-posted. He has a bunch of followers and makes a ton of money. Smart kid. I need to learn how to monetize dog pictures. It's one thing I have a lot of since I have 9 dogs!

  3. Great blog post. I too love sports. I'm a fan of all teams Chicago; Cubs, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks. I love going to live sporting events also.
In 2019 I got to go back to Chicago for work and stayed 2 extra days just to catch a Cubs home game against the Marlins at Wrigley Field.
