Week 4 Part A: Defining Target Markets

Subway:

When visiting Subway’s website, it seems they are targeting people of all backgrounds who are hungry and looking to enjoy a fresh and healthy sandwich. Subway’s motto has been “Eat Fresh” for as long as I can remember. My basic observation of demographics would be young adults between the ages of 16 and 39. My basic observation of psychographics I see are health-conscious consumers and those looking for a reasonably priced sandwich with fast service.

Hungry Bear:

Hungry Bear Deli is most likely targeting middle-older aged adults who are looking for a gourmet sandwich. My basic observation of demographics would be that Hungry Bear is aiming towards male customers because of the sandwiches looking meatier and larger portioned. My basic observation of psychographics I see are consumers who want to support a local business and are willing to pay higher prices for higher quality.

The first obvious differences that stand out right away are that Subway features a "Find A Subway" feature whereas Hungry Bear is one location and does not necessitate this feature. Hungry Bear Deli proudly serves Vista, CA, while Subway operates on a much larger scale offering options of different countries and languages. Subway is clearly a franchise, while Hungry Bear is not. Subway’s website looks very commercial and typical of a franchise while Hungry Bear's website looks like an independent designer did it. There is a crossover between the two different customers, such as they both are interested in sandwiches and enjoy eating them for a meal. By looking at the website design of Subway and Hungry Bear, I could draw the conclusion that they are trying to target any age, gender, and ethnicity who like to enjoy a sandwich. Subway has their signature logo of yellow and green arrows making an S where if you see it without having the word subway next to it, you would most likely be able to figure out what the logo was. The colors pair well with the white background, giving it a fresh feel. Hungry Bear has a bit of a darker color scheme with pictures of their sandwiches in the background. You get more of a local, homemade feeling when visiting Hungry Bear Deli’s website as opposed to Subway’s.
